Examination Guidelines

Examination Board / Examination Secretariat

The examination board and secretariat are the central point of information for all issues related to exams.

Shorten your wait! You would like to clarify something during the office hours of the Examination Board? Please describe your problem as detailed as possible in the Request Form before you visit the office hour to give us the possibility to prepare your visit beforehand. Thanks a lot!

Exam Registration

  • Exams are typically offered at the end of the semester (Feb/March + July/August). Registration is only possible during the registration period communicated on the EIT website. Please check the faculty time schedule.
  • You have to register manually the first time you want to take an exam.
  • In case of a failure, non-appearance or deregistration you will automatically be registered for the next available repetition exam. Once the mandatory registration has been made, you will be informed via the EIT website. This only applies to compulsory moduls!

Check your registrations! Taking exams without registration is not permitted.

Exam Withdrawal

  • Cancellation of an exam is possible only online until one day before the exam.
  • Deregistration is only possible for the first attempt. Note: If it is a compulsory module, you will be registered for all following exam dates of this exam, but you can step back as long as you did not take the exam for the first time.
  • A withdrawal for the second and third attempt is not possible.

  • If you know that you cannot take the first attempt of an exam the following day, you can register yourself online until midnight.
  • If it is past midnight or your 2nd or 3rd attempt, you have to provide a doctor's certificate ("Attest") assuring that you cannot take the exam (wording "prüfungunfähig erkrankt"). Please use the following Examination Certificate of Disability ("Prüfungsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung").
  • The 2nd time you are ill, you have to provide a certificate issued by a public health officer ("Amtsarzt") at your own expense.
  • All certificates have to be submitted to the examination board immediately (i.e. the latest the next working day). You may drop the certificate into the letter box at the entrance of the 4th floor or submit it to the Examination Secretariat (D16 / 407).
  • A Certificate of Incapacity ("Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung") is not sufficient.

Compulsory Modules:

  • Only exams which are not passed can be repeated.
  • You will be automatically registerd for all following exam dates of a failed or cancelled exam.
  • A repetition exam has to be taken in the following semster, you cannot step back from. If you not appear for the exam, this attempt will be counted as failed.
  • In case that the 2nd repetition (3rd attempt) of an exam is not passed, an oral exam has to be conducted within 8 weeks after the results of the exam have been published. You will get an official letter from the faculty.
  • The result of an oral exam can only be passed (4.0) or failed (5.0).
  • The final failure of an examination connotes the final failure of the study program.

  • In case of failure or deregistration, there is no automatic registration.
  • Optional modules can be repeated unlimitedly.
